Hurricane Rick weakens to category 1, leaves one dead in Mexico
Hurricane Rick weakened on Monday to a category one storm on the five-category Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, after one death was reported Sunday at Los Cabos tourist resort in Mexico .
Miguel Barraza, a 38-year-old Mexican citizen, was carried to sea by a large wave, according to a local rescue official.
Barraza and his family were standing on the rocks by the Los Cabos harbor at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula when a tide swept over them. One speedboat which rushed to the rescue did not succeed in saving his life, the official said.
Rick, reaching a top category five with winds of more than 290 km per hour on Saturday, has since then gradually reduced its intensity to category one as it moved toward Baja California on Monday, the U.S. National Weather Service said.
On Monday night, Rick was around 500 km south-southwest of CaboSan Lucas and moving northwest at over 10 km per hour. Rick is expected to approach the resort by late Tuesday or early Wednesday, according to the for casts of Mexico's state-run National Meteorological Service (SMN).
Although the hurricane has weakened, Rick is still threatening Mexico's coastal states of Baja California Sur, Sonora and Sinaloa. Rick is forecast to be dangerous as it approaches Baja Califonia, where a hurricane watch has been issued.
